Legislators play a key role in upscaling renewable energy. This was the major subject of a very focused discussion at this year’s IRENA Legislators Forum. Sessions covered interventions from Ministers and Experts on policies to support the deployment of renewable energy and measures to improve women’s engagement in the renewables sector.

A massive scaling up of renewable energies and the related climate finance on a global level is necessary to meet the 1.5°C limit from the Paris Agreement. This new policy brief discuses the existing climate finance tools and the economic specifics of the global south and distinguished between the characteristics of domestic and international finance. Additionally, it will give a prospect of new finance possibilities in the near future.
In November 2019, the GRC co-hosted a High-Level Policy Conference in Freetown, Sierra Leone to deepen discussions on specific technical and political areas of relevance for the uptake of renewable energy and clean cooking. It convened political decision makers from the Mano River Union (Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea). The long-term purpose of this policy dialogue is the development of a joint roadmap for accelerating renewable energy and clean cooking in the MRU countries. This conference marks the starting point of an ongoing legislative dialogue on the rapid deployment of renewable energy solutions in the region.
