Background & Objectives
In cooperation with the Global Renewables Congress, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Climate Vulnerable Forum Global Parliamentary Group, the International Renewable Energy Agency is hosting a Legislators Dialogue at COP28 in Dubai, UAE, under the theme Tripling Renewable Power by 2030. This year the Legislators Dialogue is framed as a networking event aimed at fostering meaningful discussions and collaboration among legislators, policymakers, and key stakeholders from around the world. The primary focus of the Legislators Dialogue is to strengthen the role of Legislators in achieving the global target of tripling renewable energy by 2030.
The existing renewable energy targets set by countries around the world fall short of what is needed to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C. To bridge this gap, it has become crucial to triple the renewable energy capacity globally and to double the energy efficiency on a regional and international level, as indicated in the roadmap developed by the COP28 Presidency, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA).
Fast-tracking the energy transition and slashing emissions before 2030 is required to slow down climate change and stop the creation of related risks. Thus, tripling the global renewable energy target is a critical step in achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement and effectively tackling climate change.
The Legislators Dialogue presents an opportunity for Legislators to take meaningful steps towards a sustainable and renewable energy future. By coming together to discuss, collaborate, and strategize, to work towards a world where renewable energy plays a central role in mitigating climate change, securing energy sustainability, and fostering economic growth on a global scale to help prevent climate disasters.
This year, the Legislators Dialogue aims to:
- create a deep understanding about the importance and impact of tripling renewable energy targets globally;
- foster collaboration among Legislators, NGOs, CSOs, experts and stakeholders working towards reducing global emissions to secure a sustainable future;
- share knowledge and best practices in implementing renewable energy policies and regulatory frameworks;
- deepen understanding of the link between mitigation and adaptation to support legislative action for infrastructure resilience, risk disclosure, incentives for financing and comprehensive risk management;
- generate momentum to drive the acceleration of renewable energy adoption as a pivotal solution to combat climate change.
